I might choose a time like 10:00 a.m. and then worry about it until I make the call. Driving to work is not terrible. Some of the drive  I am able to do on single lane roads, which is nice because I know that nobody is going to pull up alongside me and look at me. Intersections are the worst. I never pull right up beside another car because then the person might look at me. Do I smile? Look straight ahead? Its just easier to stay a car length back. If I have to get gas, I make sure to go to a gas station with which I am familiar. I wouldnt want to make a fool of myself by pulling up to the wrong pump. I always choose self-serve over full-serve. That way I dont have to talk to anybody. Every once in a while, I decide that I need to get a haircut â€" one that doesnt involve cutting my own hair (and the disastrous results that can involve). The problem with getting a haircut is that you have to talk to the hairdresser. Usually, I answer in one-word sentences and eventually, she stops trying to talk to me. I dont have anything interesting to say anyway, so its better that she and I share the time in silence. Sometimes she will talk with her colleagues because clearly, I have become too boring. Getting back to work â€" yes I do work. Have done so for my whole adult life. I know that some people with SAD do not work. I guess I dont have it as bad as them. As much as I would love to just stay in my house and never leave, I do have to earn an income, and work is the only way I have found to do so. I have had different kinds of jobs, each with their own problems. As much as people will tell you that you can find a job that doesnt involve people â€" thats not true. If you work with animals, you usually have to talk to their owners. If you work on a computer, you usually have to talk to other people about what you are doing. Even jobs that really dont involve people do still involve other employees. And lunch hours. And water cooler talk. Those times that I do eat lunch with others are a challenge. Sometimes I am OK and make it through fine. Other times, it feels like I will never get through the meal. My hands are shaking so bad the food can barely stay on my fork. It always feels like I am narrowly averting disaster. That next time, I will surely spill my drink or just not be able to eat at all. Other people might spend their days conversing with friends. I dont. I know people, but I dont really have any friends. Its not that people dont like me, they just dont really know me. Its hard to get to know me when I am so anxious all the time. People have tried to be my friend, but I dont reciprocate because of my anxiety. I dont call because I am afraid. Eventually, the person stops trying. If its a day that I dont have to work, and I dont have any other plans, then I usually stay home. Which is good because I dont feel as anxious, but bad because I do eventually get lonely. I think about everyone else out doing fun and exciting things with friends and family. I start to get down if I spend too much time alone. Its a paradox really; Im afraid to be with people, but at the same time I get down being alone. If on a particular day, like I mentioned before, I have a specific engagement where I have to speak, I will worry about it all day. If its a speech I have to give, I can worry about it for weeks. Or months. And when I say worry, I mean panic. Full-blown panic attacks in the middle of the night. Just in anticipation of the event. For the most part, I try to avoid these types of responsibilities. But life sometimes throws them at you. Grocery shopping is not too bad. I keep a  list in hand, my head down, and shop as fast as I can so that I can get out of the store. If I see someone I know, I usually do my best to avoid having to talk to that person. What will I say? They will think I am boring. The conversation will dwindle and it will be awkward. Better just to avoid it altogether. I usually eat dinner alone and then maybe watch television. I dont usually have plans in the evening during the week. Or on the weekend, come to think of it. In order to have plans, you have to have friends. Once in a while, I will do something with my family. Once in a while doesnt happen very often. I dont think I choose to be this way. I dont know why anyone would choose to be this way. Its a horrible way to live. I would rather have a problem that was very specific, like a fear of spiders or fear of heights. That is something people can understand and it doesnt affect every aspect of your life. That is what this does. It affects every part of my life. Because spending the rest of my life alone is not really a life. When my head hits the pillow, the thoughts return. What did I do wrong today? How  did I embarrass myself? What do I have to do tomorrow? How can I get out of it? If I am lucky, I fall asleep right away. I have found that exercise helps to tire me out and lets me fall asleep more easily. If I havent exercised, it can take hours to fall asleep. The thoughts just keep churning through my head and dont relent. I want to get help but I dont know how. Nobody knows about the inner turmoil I go through. They might have noticed a bit of anxiety here and there, but for the most part, I keep it pretty well hidden. Its not like other mental illnesses where there is an impact on others in my life; its only me that gets the brunt of it. I just keep on taking it because I dont know how to get over it. There are some rays of hope, though. I know I havent tried everything to fight my fears and Im not willing to give up just yet. I do believe that meeting other people like myself could make a difference. If I could join a therapy group specifically to help people with social anxiety disorder (SAD), then at least I would know everyone else there was dealing with the same problems. It would feel less awkward because we would all be in the same boat. In the meantime, I continue to read all I can. I may try another self-help program or one day work up the courage to make an appointment with my doctor. Its hard. Every day is hard, but I keep going knowing that it will be better someday. I am better now than I used to be, and I think that just comes with age. I do think that the more I expose myself to social situations, the more comfortable I will become. In some ways, I just lack the practice because fear has kept me away. I know that there are others who have much worse social anxiety than me. There are probably some who have it milder as well. I just know that mine is impairing enough that it affects everything I do on a daily basis. That really is the struggle â€" that the fear and anxiety never leaves me because our world is so social. Machiavelli's View Of Human Nature In The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli presents a view of governing a state that is drastically different from that of humanists of his time. Machiavelli believes the ruling Prince should be the sole authority determining every aspect of the state and put in effect a policy which would serve his best interests. These interests were gaining, maintaining, and expanding his political power.1 His understanding of human nature was a complete contradiction of what humanists believed and taught. Machiavelli strongly promoted a secular society and felt morality was not necessary but in fact stood in the way of an effectively governed principality.2 Though in come cases Machiavelli's suggestions seem harsh and immoral one must remember that these views were derived out of concern Italy's unstable political condition.3 Though humanists of Machiavelli's time believed that an individual had much to offer to the well being of the state, Machiavelli was quick to mock human nature. Humanists believed that An individual only 'grows to maturity- both intellectually and morally- through participation' in the life of the state.4 Machiavelli generally distrusted citizens, stating that ...in time of adversity, when the state is in need of it's citizens there are few to be found.5 Machiavelli further goes on to question the loyalty of the citizens and advises the Prince that ...because men a wretched creatures who would not keep their word to you, you need keep your word to them.6 However, Machiavelli did not feel that a Prince should mistreat the citizens. This suggestion once again to serve the Prince's best interests. If a prince can not be both feared and loved, Machiavelli suggests, it would be better for him to be feared bey the citizens within his own principality. He makes the generalization that men are, ...ungrateful, fickle, liars, and deceivers, they shun danger and are greedy for profit; while you treat them well they are yours.7 He characterizes men as being self centered and not willing to act in the best interest of the state,[and when the prince] is in danger they turn against [him].8 Machiavelli reinforces the prince's need to be feared by stating: Men worry less about doing an injury to one who makes himself loved than to one who makes himself feared. The bond of love is one which men, wretched creatures they are, break when it is to their advantage to do so; but fear is strengthened by a dread of punishment which is always effective.9 In order to win honor, Machaivelli suggests that a prince must be readily willing to deceive the citizens. One way is to ...show his esteem for talent actively encouraging the able and honouring those who excel in their professions...so that they can go peaceably about their business.10 By encouraging citizens to excel at their professions he would also be encouraging them to ...increase the prosperity of the their state.11 These measures, though carried out in deception, would bring the prince honor and trust amongst the citizens, especially those who were in the best positions to oppose him. Machiavelli postulates that a prince must also deceive those who attempt to flatter him. [In] choosing wise men for his government and allowing those the freedom to speak the truth to him, and then only concerning matters on which he asks their opinion, and nothing else. But he should also question them toughly and listen to what they say; then he should make up his own mind.12 Since each person will only advice the prince in accord to his own interests, the prince must act on his own accord. Machiavelli discourages action to taken otherwise ...since men will always do badly by [the prince] unless they are forced to be virtuous.13 Machiavelli actively promoted a secular form of politics. He laid aside the Medieval conception of the state as a necessary creation for humankinds spiritual, material, and social well-being.14 In such a state,[a] ruler was justified in his exercise of political power only if it contributed to the common good of the people he served, [and] the ethical side of a princes activity...ought to [be] based on Christian moral principles....15 Machiavelli believed a secular form of government to be a more realistic type. They have lagged behind men and have been restricted from being free from social, economic and political rules and regulations. Even the civil code of the country confirmed womens inferior position. In the faithful attempt of trying to even the rights of women, the Women in Development group sought to assist the women of Ethiopia by implementing the National Policy on Women. The terms of this policy aim to create appropriate structures within government offices and institutions to establish equitable and gender-sensistive public policies. Among other attempts, Meaza Ashenafi was one of the privileged women of Ethiopia in the Ethiopian Women Lawyer Association, that stood up for what she believed in and put forth practices for over 300 women to undergo paralegal training for basic Ethiopian law. Her idea is to empower women and allow them to use the information for themselves to be able to speak and defend and fight for equality. She envisioned more educated women, which was also the goal of the Revolutionary Ethiopia Womens association, in advocacy of actively educating women. Ethiopia also takes on a physical heavy toll on women and even the children residing in the rural areas which is over 85%, where it is labor intensive. As far as their future can go, there are priorities that can be subdued in the country to improve womens lifestyle in Ethiopia. Realistic steps such as improving the level of income by facilitating opportunities and woman-friendly conditions could benefit, women in some economic sectors sum up a larger workforce than men but since their participation is not valued, they have not received their fair share of the nations wealth. Its essential and practical to improve the health and nutrition of mothers and as well as improved education for both them and their children. These are only small practical steps though that are put forward from Pathfinder International, United Nations Population Fund amongst other small organizations Even with all the attempts to appease to women and their lifestyle and small organizations trying their best to help. Ethiopia truly has potential to change its perspective on women, yet due to the deep-rooted traditional values and beliefs, it could take much longer to bring that of inequality to justice. A real change would require more than providing room for short-term improvements, it would take a change in government attitudes and turning culture around. In a less developed country, its important to forward recommendations to allow not only for women to live as equals amongst men but to create a progressive society in which women are not vulnerable to domestic violence, sexual exploitation and extreme labor as well as having access to health and maternal care and education to be free from that of culturally-enforced subjugation.

The Golden Toad was discovered in 1964, by a naturalist visiting a high-altitude Costa Rican cloud forest; the bright orange, almost unnatural color of the males made an immediate impression, although the slightly larger females were much less ornate. For the next 25 years, the Golden Toad could only be observed during the spring mating season, when large groups of males would swarm over less numerous females in small ponds and puddles. As recently as 1987, over a thousand adults were observed mating, then only a single individual in 1988 and 1989 and none thereafter. The Romantic Era Of Opera Music Essay The Romantic Era was a period in music in which there was much change during the 1850s to the 1920s in the theory and compositional practice of music. The composers wrote their pieces with more artistic freedom, experimentation, and creativity than the artists of the classical era and this caused the melody to become the more dominant feature in the songs composed. Some popular composers that originated out of this era are: Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, Frà ©dà ©ric Chopin, and Richard Wagner. For inspiration, many Romantic composers turned to visual arts, poetry, drama and literature, and to nature itself. These influences led composers to express emotion in their music. These changes in the sound of the music came in the form of the increased use of dissonance and the extended use of chromatics. Although Romantic era music contained classical era roots, the instruments used in the Romantic era were changing and brass and woodwind instruments were being improved in the quality of sound, as well as in how they were played. Some Romantic era composers used their compositions to express nationalism by the way of incorporating elements unique to their native cultures, such as folk songs, dances, and legendary histories. Mikhail Glinka is an example of a composer who wrote operas specifically on Russian subjects. Many great operas derived from the Romantic era including Gaetano Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor, as well as Gioachino Rossinis The Barber of Seville. Opera was very dominant in Italy where the operas differed from the operas of the classical era because the form of the pieces were being changed by having the tenors given the heroic lead in operas and by giving the chorus a more important lead than before. Verdi also continued to express nationalism in his operas, Va, pensiero, which was interpreted as giving meaning to the struggle for Italian independence and Verdi was expressing his hope to unify Italy. By the end of the Romantic era, opera had become a combination of many art forms including the theatre, dance and orchestra oriented music. Although opera was predominant in Italy, many other European composers were contributing to the changes in the music of their generation, including German composer Richard Wagner. Richard Wagner was born on May 22, 1813 in Leipzig, Germany where he had a difficult childhood. Wagners father died of typhus six months after Richards birth which led his mother Johanna Rosine Wagner, to begin living with the actor and playwright Ludwig Geyer, who had been a friend of Richards father up until his death. Richards mother then proceeded to marry Ludwig Geyer and they moved the family to Dresden. It is here where Wagner started his musical learning. Richard first took interest in his step fathers love for the theatre and performance arts and he played an angel in a play at a local theatre. When he was seven, Wagner was enrolled at Pastor Wetzels school at Possendorf, near Dresden, where he received some piano instruction from his Latin teacher. A year later his stepfather died which led the ei ght year old Wagner to attend the Kreuz Grammar School in Dresden. Although Richard was largely a self taught musician he persuaded his family to allow him to take music lessons. From 1828-1831 Wagner completed his first lessons in composition with Christian Gottlieb Mà ¼ller and by the time he was fifteen he had already written his first play. Wagners focus on drama is one of the reasons his operas really shined as being different than operas of the classical era. He enrolled at the University of Leipzig in 1831 where Wagner further took composition lessons from Christian Theodor Weinlig who refused to let Richard pay for the lessons he was giving him. Weinlig was so impressed with Wagners talents that he arranged for one of Wagners piano works to be published. Wagner continued his studies in music and he completed his first opera when he was twenty years old called Die Feen. This opera would not be produced until half a century later when it was premiered in Munich shortly after his death in 1883. Around the time he wrote his first opera, Wagner married the actress Minna Planer, who he moved to Riga with where he became the music director of the local opera house. His relationship with his wife was a troubled one in that she left him once for another man, but came back to him before they moved to Paris due to fleeing from tremendous debt. In 1862 he returned to Germany, where he moved in with Ludwig II. After the success of his opera, Tristan und Isolde, he decided to do more traveling around Europe where he created such classics as Siegfried and Gà ¶tterdà ¤mmerung. Towards the end of his life Wagner decided to settle in Italy where wrote his final opera, Parsifal. Parsifal was first preformed at the Bayreuth festival which occurred at the opera house in which Wagner himself funded. After the second Bayreuth festival the Wagners decided to take a trip to Venice in the winter of 1883. It is here where Richard Wagner passed away due to a heart attack. In his long musical career Wagner created thirteen operas including the most notable Rienzi, Der fliegende Hollà ¤nde, Tristan und Isolde, and Der Ring des Nibelungen. It was clear that Wagner was changing the way operas were being preformed, and he continued to push the music further into the Romantic era by viewing operas as total art works.

I. BACKGROUND In October 1995, Chester Allan, Gillette’s country manager in Indonesia, was developing his unit’s 1996 marketing plan. Once completed, it would be forwarded to Rigoberto Effio, business director in Gillete’s Asia-Pacific group based in Singapore. Each year Effio received and approved marketing plans for the 12 countries in his region, which reached from Australia to China. Once approved by Ian Jackson, Asia-Pacific group vice president, the overall marketing plan-for the region would be reviewed subsequently, along with other regional plans, by Robert King, executive vice president of Gillette’s International Group. Allan’s plan projected a 19% increase in blade sales in Indonesia in 1996 from 115 million to 136 million. This seemed reasonable given a 17% increase in 1995 over the previous year. With a population of almost 200 million, Indonesia represented an important country in the portfolio of markets for which Effio and Jackson were responsible. Effio wondered whether investment spending in marketing beyond the 1995 level of 12% of sales might further accelerate market development. Given the growth rates of Gillette’s business in other Asia-Pacific countries, Effio believed that a 25% to 30% increase in blade sales could be achieved in Indonesia in 1996. II. Chinese Emperors - Shang Dynasty

The Shang Dynasty is the first Chinese imperial dynasty for which we have actual documentary evidence. Since the Shang is so very ancient, the sources are unclear. We dont even know for sure when the Shang Dynasty began its rule over the Yellow River Valley of China.  Some historians believe that it was around the year 1700 BCE, while others place it later, c. 1558 BCE. In any case, the Shang Dynasty succeeded the Xia Dynasty, which was a legendary ruling family from approximately 2070 BCE to about 1600 BCE. We have no surviving written records for the Xia, although they probably did have a writing system. Archaeological evidence from the Erlitou sites does give support to the idea that a complex culture had already arisen in northern China at this time. Fortunately for us, the Shang have left some slightly clearer records than their Xia predecessors did. The traditional sources for the Shang era include the Bamboo Annals and the Records of the Grand Historian by Sima Qian. These records were written much, much later than the Shang period, however; Sima Qian wasnt even born until around 145 to 135 BCE.  As a result, modern historians were quite skeptical even about the existence of the Shang Dynasty until archaeology miraculously provided some proof. In the early 20th century, archaeologists found an early form of Chinese writing that was inscribed (or in rare cases painted) onto turtle shells or large, flat animal bones like the shoulder blades of oxen. These bones were then put into a fire, and the cracks that developed from the heat would help a magical diviner to predict the future or tell their customer whether their prayers would be answered.   Called oracle bones, these magical divination tools provided us proof that the Shang Dynasty really did exist.  Some of the seekers who asked questions of the gods via the oracle bones were the emperors themselves or officials from the court  so we even got confirmation of some of their names, along with rough dates when they were active. In many cases, the evidence from the Shang Dynasty oracle bones matched quite closely with the recorded tradition about that time from the Bamboo Annals and the Records of the Grand Historian. Still, it should not surprise anyone that there are still gaps and discrepancies in the imperial list below.  After all, the Shang Dynasty ruled China a very, very long time ago.
